Should You Build Your Pickleball Court Yourself?

The honest answer depends entirely on what you're starting with. Here's what DIY actually requires, what a contractor charges for, and a checklist to help you decide before you buy a single bag of concrete.

The Short Version

If you're converting an existing driveway, patio, or slab, DIY is genuinely the right call for most homeowners — you're painting lines and setting a net, not pouring concrete. If you're building a court from bare ground, that's a fundamentally different project involving excavation, grading for drainage, and a structural base that isn't forgiving of mistakes. Most people who DIY a from-scratch build still hire out the excavation and base work, then handle surfacing, painting, and fencing themselves to save on labor.

1. Do you already have a usable slab or driveway?

What a Contractor Actually Charges For

Step-by-Step: DIY Driveway or Slab Conversion

This is the realistic DIY path most homeowners take, assuming you already have a usable concrete or asphalt pad:

The good news: converting an existing pad doesn't require specialty equipment. The skills that matter most aren't technical — they're patience and precision. Squaring your corners accurately and keeping paint lines crisp matters far more to the finished result than any special training, but it does reward going slow: rushing the layout step is the single most common reason DIY courts end up with visibly crooked lines.

If your project involves any concrete or asphalt work — patching a larger damaged area, pouring a small extension, or building from bare ground — that's where DIY skill requirements jump significantly. Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Contractor

  • Is grading and drainage planning included in your quote, or priced separately?

  • Do you handle the permit application, or is that on me?
  • What's your estimated timeline from contract signing to first playable day?
  • Can I see photos or visit a court you've built that's at least 2–3 years old?

That last question matters more than it sounds — plenty of new courts look great on day one. A contractor willing to show you their work after a few seasons of real weather and real play is telling you something about how confident they are in their base work.

Converting a Tennis Court Into Pickleball Courts

If you or your community has access to an underused tennis court, this is often the single best value in pickleball construction. The main design decision is whether to run permanent lines for dedicated pickleball courts or dual-purpose lines that support both sports — dual-line courts are more flexible for shared community spaces but are visually busier and can make line calls more contentious during play.

A Note on Indoor Construction

Converting indoor space — a gym, warehouse, or barn — into a pickleball court follows the same DIY-vs-contractor logic, with one added constraint: ceiling height.
